We Believe In Business Transformation

Mr. Tey Chia Lung, Managing Director of Bake Inc Pte Ltd, surveyed the sales floor with a thoughtful frown. The current business climate had been kind to him, but he knew there is room for accelerated productivity and untapped potential for unprecedented growth. His mission was clear: he needed a strategic plan to boost productivity and set new records for the company. It was time for a game-changing strategy—or a "betterer" plan, as he put it.

His thoughts drifted to his recent monthly “kopi date” with Mr. Edmund Zhang, Managing Director of Axquisite where Mr. Zhang spoke positively about NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) and the support they provide for business transformation projects.

Intrigued, Mr. Tey arranged another meeting with Mr. Zhang to dive deeper into this opportunity. Mr. Tey was delighted to learn from this 2nd “kopi date” that through “National Trades Union Congress Company Training Committee Grant” (NTUC’s CTC Grant), companies can receive up to 70% funding to help them embark on these challenging yet rewarding journeys; alleviating the pressures of initial investment for companies seeking growth.

Mr. Zhang urged Mr. Tey to engage with NTUC’s e2i and made strong recommendations for him to connect with Ms. Christine Choy, a passionate and dedicated Senior Specialist from e2i’s Lifestyle and Consumer Services team.

With her extensive experience, Mr. Zhang is confident that Ms. Choy could guide Mr. Tey and Bake Inc through their transformation process. Mr. Zhang then shared the first steps Mr. Tey could take to get started on this journey.

The first crucial step was to align with NTUC, and Mr. Tey agreed that signing up with the Food Drinks Allied Workers Union (FDAWU) would be a strategic move.

The next phase involved mapping out the benefits of the transformation for both the company and its employees with e2i’s guidance. Proposed ideas included integrating automation and technology to streamline operations and meet increasing demands
for new services and products.

Mr. Zhang stressed that this transformation not only enhanced productivity at his company but also empowered his employees to develop new skills, which leads to higher job satisfaction and in some cases, higher wages for the employee! For the company, this meant better efficiency and the opportunity to generate increased revenue—a win-win for everyone involved really!

Circling back to present day, with the support of FDAWU and NTUC’s e2i, Mr. Tey and his team has successfully secured approval for their transformation project and eagerly anticipated the journey ahead.

Mr. Tey expressed his gratitude to Mr. Zhang for his timely intervention and introduction to NTUC’s e2i and FDAWU. This was just the first phase of his plan to make the company “betterer.” He now has his eyes set on phase two, which focuses on driving further improvements with the continued support of NTUC’s e2i and FDAWU.

Reflecting on his path to joining FDAWU and embarking on the NTUC CTC Grant project, Mr. Tey remembered Mr. Zhang’s deep seeded belief in the power of collaboration.

Even prior to this project, Mr. Zhang’s team had been collaborating with NTUC's e2i on various initiatives, including bringing world-class chefs to Singapore to enrich the local culinary scene, providing those who could not attend overseas tradeshows with an opportunity to learn from experts across the globe. This philosophy led to renowned chefs visiting Singapore to impart their skills, offering local professionals new perspectives and insights.

Mr. Zhang had also participated in the Baker’s Symposium at the Devan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability, where industry trends and innovations were shared. Such events fostered a sense of community and learning, reinforcing that companies were not alone in their growth journeys, that they can lean on NTUC’s e2i to support and guide them every step of the way.

Believing in the endless journey of productivity improvement, Mr. Zhang and his team continued to partner with NTUC’s e2i to empower the local workforce.
